The Triumph at the Berlin Olympics

There have been many truly memorable moments in black history where the blatant wrongness of racial discrimination has been dramatically put on display. The 1936 Olympics in Hitler’s Germany may be one of the most dramatic because of what the madman wanted to happen and what really happened.

There are many lessons we can gather from Jesse’s experience beyond that obvious that Hitler’s ideas of Aryan supremacy were deeply wrong and offensive to all mankind, not just to the victims of discrimination. We see that even in a society that has become characterized as racist, such as Germany in the 1930’s, the people, the common everyday folk of Germany had no room in their hearts for such racism that was being pushed upon them by their leadership. This can be a source of inspiration and hope for all of us and an encouragement not to prejudge a people who we might even perceive as being racists because many times the good people, the common everyday people will have nothing to do with such evil.

And we can celebrate this great victory in a very difficult circumstance in which it wasn’t speeches that proved that race or color or creed don’t make a man superior. Instead it is the talent, the integrity and the hard work of each individual that shows the quality that is from within. Jesse Owens demonstrated that even to the likes of Adolph Hitler. What you want in a forex book instead is calm, reasonable, practical advice. Showy, glitzy language suggests the writer is trying to pull a fast one. (And you have to wonder: If it’s SO EASY to make millions in forex trading, why is this guy writing books about it instead of doing it?) Restrained, logical language suggests the writer knows the market and is simply explaining what he’s learned.

Take note also of the book’s presentation. Is it an e-book sold by some guy off his Web site? Is it riddled with grammar and spelling errors? Or does it appear to have been written and edited by professionals, and presented in an appealing, straightforward manner? You want a book that fits the latter description. It’s more likely to be reliable and up-front about the pros and cons of forex trading.

Finally, when considering a forex book, it’s worth taking a few minutes to Google the author’s name and see what comes up. Are there reviews of the book written by actual readers (not testimonials provided on the author’s Web site)? Has the author been mentioned in any news stories? What is his or her background? There’s an old adage that says, “if you stick around long enough – things will change.” Well, I have and they did!

If you’ve been around as long as I have, then you can remember when you told people who asked that you were in “Direct Sales” – they pegged you about two steps above a snake oil salesman. I’m happy to tell you that has all changed, and to buy and sell in the comfort of a home setting is at the heart of direct sales today.

Latest available figures from the Direct Selling Association (DSA) shows more than $28 billion for the direct-selling industry in 2002, and an estimated 13 million independent direct salespeople. This was an increase from $22 billion in 1997, with 9.3 million salespeople.

Neil H. Offen, DSA President, attributes this growth to having more people involved and a more sophisticated industry. He claims there are more college graduates as consultants, and the industry being global and more attractive to Wall Street investors and Venture Capital groups.

Direct-sales consultants, though still primarily made up of women, are becoming more diverse. The male contingent is steadily growing from 10% in 1990 to 25% today. This is attributed to the growth of new products such as vitamins, food supplements, long-distance telephone service, etc., that are not perceived as typically female-centric products as cosmetics and housewares were.

With all the growth, entrepreneurs still have to deal with the stigma that direct-sales opportunities are like pyramid schemes. Pyramid schemes require you to lay out cash for the right to recruit others. There is usually no product involved, and profits for those at the top levels come solely from new recruits.

Direct sales, on the other hand, involves selling legitimate products or services and the profit goes to the seller and his/her recruiter. At the higher levels of a direct-sales company, consultants have a group of recruits selling below them from which they receive commissions – also known as a downline. DSA President Offen suggests ways of checking out the legitimacy of a company by asking about the kinds of warranties and protection they offer. And even if the company has a good track record, make sure you absolutely love the product you’ll be selling because that will determine how successful you are.

Here is a list of questions that should help you determine whether a company is shady or just plain wrong for you:

• Is the money you’re going to make come primarily from recruiting or selling a product? Recruiting is generally part of direct selling, but your primary income as a consultant should come from sales. If the company is only discussing recruiting – be suspicious.

• Do you risk financial loss by being involved with the company? Almost all direct-selling companies require minimal starting costs – usually $500 maximum. Watch out for schemes where people make money solely from selling startup kits.

• Would you buy the product if you weren’t working for the company? If you don’t see a compelling reason to be a customer, you probably don’t want to sell the product either.

• Does it sound too good to be true? Be wary of get-rich-quick schemes, such as making a million dollars in 6 months. Investigate company literature, reputation, consultants and customers before you get involved with any opportunity.

I love to spend hours looking at flea markets for different items. Different vendors set up their products in a central location so that consumers can spend their time walking around and see the new and used items available for sale. You never know what you will come across at a flea market. There are plenty of new and used items as well as home made crafts and clothing to choose from.

To help make your day at the flea market the best it can be plan for the day. Most flea markets are outdoors so you may want some sunscreen and a hat. I have found it is always worth my time to look around though because I may find the vendor in the next aisle has the same item for $10 less. If I am going to go back to check on an item with a particular vendor I write down their location because by the end of the day it can be difficult to remember who is located where.

Paget’s disease

Commission or Bribe?

Supposed you’ve decided to move part of your business overseas, those administrative fees could look like illegal bribes.

Let’s say that to open a manufacturing plant in Southeast Asia you need a permit from the local government. A government agent there offers to get you the permit within a week – and his commission will only be $1,000. Back off! Watch your step here. In many countries, kickbacks and bribes have long been the accepted cost of doing business. However, the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA), enacted by Congress in l977, prohibits bribery of officials in other countries.

It’s illegal to make payments, offers or even promises of anything of value to foreign officials to obtain or retain business or get an advantage. It’s also illegal to make such payment to a third party (say the official’s wife or sibling).

For over 20 years the United States was the only country trying to prohibit bribery to foreign officials. U.S. companies complained they faced either bribing foreign officials and risking FCPA prosecution or losing the contract.

Since then, with the urging of the US, international organizations have enacted treaties and conventions aimed at stamping out this practice. The European Union, the United Nations, and the World Bank have adopted resolutions and policies against corruption which has helped to level the playing field.

You don’t want to get tangled up in bribery! The problem is it’s rarely easy to tell whether a proposed payment is actually a bribe. For instance, the FCPA doesn’t prohibit “grease payments” which are fees paid to foreign officials to expedite the actions the government would eventually take anyway, such as issuing a routine permit. But suppose you need a permit to build an oil pipeline, and a government agent asks for a few thousand dollars for advising you on environmental issues and compliances to make sure you get the permit. Would that be a “grease payment,” or a bribe for the officials to look the other way?

In light of the new rulings and laws, people of authority rarely ask for bribes, but they may ask for a small payment for advice on doing business there. For instance, if a government agency asks your company to build a park or pave a road in exchange for approval, that wouldn’t count as a “bribe.”
